They came west looking for new opportunities and they succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. Entrepreneurs such as James Lougheed, Max Bell, Eric Harvie, and A.E. Cross all had a few characteristics in common: they were exceptionally ambitious and took enormous risks. And they went from rags to riches.
Prologue
This was no life for a cowboy! All he ever wanted was to be like his hero, Clem Gardner. Clem had been a performer at the first Calgary Stampede and he could rope a calf, ride a bronco, and race a chuckwagon better than anyone. During the Stampede he had even ridden Cyclone, the meanest horse at the show. Bill had hoped that by this point in his life he would have been a cowboy just like Clem. Instead, he was stuck at a desk at some uppity school on the Pacific Coast of all places. There were no cowboys here; just boys who wanted to excel at sailing, rowing, and swimming. How would any of these things come in handy to a cowboy who planned to live his life on an Alberta ranch?
As Bill sat contemplating his situation, he read the school motto for the millionth time: "Brentonians are called to take up the torch of learning and civilization to pass from hand to hand. From generation to generation, we are guardians of the flame." Well, the only flame Bill was going to guard was the one that lit the end of his cigarette. Anyway, maybe if he got caught smoking he'd be sent back home to Alberta where he belonged.
