With a completely selfless indifference to enemy fire, the quiet heroes featured in this book faced danger and atrocity. With courage and audacity they fought for their lives and they fought for ours. From the whistling of enemy shells and pounding of explosives come these inspiring stories of friendship, loyalty, determination, and bravery. Relive the events that influenced the outcome of World War II and meet the heroes who helped shape life as we know it today.
Prologue
All of the veterans I interviewed for this book were memorable. However, my interview with Fred Snell of Winnipeg, Manitoba, stood out among the rest. He told me about the snipers he killed after they'd wiped out half his platoon. He explained how his platoon leader had bled to death on his lap, and how he'd watched helplessly as men burned to death in their tank after hitting a land mine. With dry eyes he reiterated the stories of his war experiences, while I listened with wonder at how he could appear so unaVected ‹ so normal. He displayed little emotion as he relived the events of 60 years ago.
Only one story managed to bring tears to his eyes, and to mine. One day his young daughter was crying as she arrived home from school. In honour of Remembrance Day, her teacher had told the class about the Canadians who fought in World War II and asked if anyone knew a hero living in their town. The students shook their heads. The teacher continued, "There is a man, the father of someone right here in this room, who won the second highest military award for bravery." Then she explained what had earned him such a distinguished award.
The little girl sobbed as she turned her tear-strewn face to her father and asked, "Daddy, why didn't you ever tell me?"
